چکیده

For robotic vehicles to navigate safely and efficiently in pedestrian-rich environments, it is important to model subtle human behaviors and navigation rules. However, while instinctive to humans, socially compliant navigation is still difficult to quantify due to the stochasticity in people’s behaviors. Existing works are mostly focused on using featurematching techniques to describe and imitate human paths, but often do not generalize well since the feature values can vary from person to person, and even run to run. This work notes that while it is challenging to directly specify the details of what to do (precise mechanisms of human navigation), it is straightforward to specify what not to do (violations of social norms). Specifically, using deep reinforcement learning, this work develops a time-efficient navigation policy that respects common social norms. The proposed method is shown to enable fully autonomous navigation of a robotic vehicle moving at human walking speed in an environment with many pedestrians.

Socially-Aware Navigation Using Topological Maps and Social Norm Learning

We present socially-aware navigation for an intelligent robot wheelchair in an environment with many pedestrians. The robot learns social norms by observing the behaviors of human pedestrians, interpreting detected biases as social norms, and incorporating those norms into its motion planning. We compare our socially-aware motion planner with a baseline motion planner that produces safe, collis...

SPENCER: A Socially Aware Service Robot for Passenger Guidance and Help in Busy Airports

We present an ample description of a socially compliant mobile robotic platform, which is developed in the EU-funded project SPENCER. The purpose of this robot is to assist, inform and guide passengers in large and busy airports. One particular aim is to bring travellers of connecting flights conveniently and efficiently from their arrival gate to the passport control. The uniqueness of the pro...

Too Cool for School — Adding Social Constraints in Human Aware Planning

Robots operating in the presence of humans should adapt their plans and behavior accordingly. The recent area of humanaware planning (HAP) addresses this problem. In this paper, we propose a method for extending HAP to so-called Socially Aware planning. We build on known principles for human context recognition, extending them to support different social situations. In this new paradigm, we are...

Social Path Planning: Generic Human-Robot Interaction Framework for Robotic Navigation Tasks

This paper formulates a generic framework for the social path planning problem. Previous works deal with very specific cases of socially-aware motion planning. Instead, here we propose a mathematical formulation that can be considered the preliminary steps towards a general theoretical setting, incorporating previous work as sub-cases. Social path planning is analyzed into 6 different subproble...

A Fast Randomized Method to Find Homotopy Classes for Socially-Aware Navigation

We introduce and show preliminary results of a fast randomized method that finds a set of K paths lying in distinct homotopy classes. We frame the path planning task as a graph search problem, where the navigation graph is based on a Voronoi diagram. The search is biased by a cost function derived from the social force model that is used to generate and select the paths. We compare our method t...
